Love Is No Stranger

The story behind the song ...

Philip Govan is an amazing producer. There was a song that was playing on the radio with this same style of shuffle beat. I told him I really liked it and he went and put together some music with that kind of beat for me to write to.

Jamago

At this time, he and I were working in the group Jamago, which also included Monique Jarvis and Robert Mathis.

The purpose of Jamago was to write music.  Robert played piano, wrote words and melodies and always had a great approach when it came to how a song should be sung. Monique has a really wonderful voice, is a lyricist and a poet.  She came from a musical family.  Her mom is a phenom vocalist. I had the opportunity to work with her and get some coaching.  She was extremely valuable to me because she was the first African American woman that I worked with who could do opera.  She understood my voice.  I REALLY appreciated her.

Philip was and is the e-man.  He could do everything.  Play multiple instruments, compose, write, arrange, etc., etc., etc.  He was always the band leader because of his natural gifts.

Anyway, The name "Jamago," was a combination of our names- JArvis, MAthis, GOvan.  I don't remember who came up with the concept, but we all thought it was really cool.  I still think so.

As I worked on the words and the melody for this tune, Robert gave wonderful feedback and suggestions to help me get it just right.

The words were not directed at anybody - they just came to me as did the melody.  This was actually written in the late 90's - I suppose. I still have a copy of the original version we recorded back then.

In 2004, I went and recorded it with new music done by Michael Terry at The Music Lab.  And, he never listened to the original music.  I sang the song to him and he composed the music around the melody.  It came out very similar to the original.  I guess there's kind of just one way to do this kind of rock shuffle...

I really like this song. I totally rocks.

He told me love was forever
He told me that we would always be together
How my baby lied

Just when I was trustin’
We started fighting with all kinds of fussin’
How I cried

Love is no stranger
Many times it’s been inside my heart
Love has its dangers
And I chose to play a part

Don’t bother me
You’re hurting me
Give me some time
To mend my heart
Love I need a start

He took me away to heaven
He let me touch the stars and what’s beyond them
I learned to fly
He left me hurt and broken
He filled my heart with all his dreams
How I cried

Love is no stranger
Many times it’s been inside my heart
Love has its dangers
And I chose to play a part

Don’t bother me
You’re hurting me
Give me some time
To mend my heart
Love I need a start
